PICU Information
Paediatric intensive care (PICU) is provided only in a limited number of specialist hospitals in London. Critically ill and injured children are sometimes taken by ambulance to the nearest District General Hospital, which may not have a PICU. Whilst providing all treatment necessary to stabilise the patient, if on-going intensive care is needed, they will need to transfer him/her to a PICU.
Critically ill or injured children will be transferred to the nearest hospital with a PICU bed available that is suitable for his or her needs.
